Flaked Stone Analysis

Flaked StoneFlaked stone artifacts are the most ubiquitous, and sometimes the only archaeological remains found at many archaeological sites in the western United States. Understanding the nature of prehistoric human land use from such remains requires expertise in understanding the behavioral correlates to detailed physical attributes of stone tools and manufacturing waste. Pacific Legacy’s flaked stone analysts are trained to identify multiple prehistoric flaked stone technologies, from the procurement of raw material (e.g., quarrying) through the manufacture process, and including stone tool use , breakage, repair and discard. Our specialists have worked on assemblages throughout California and the western Great Basin. Our flaked stone analysts have participated as instructors in several flaked stone technology field classes held for professional archaeologists.
